You'll notice a few changes in the way the images are displayed and it might take you a little bit to navigate through the photos, but I think you will like the new look. In addition we have added several new collections. The following are photographs from those collections.

Special Collections and
University Archives have had a busy summer moving shelves, boxes, and books
into a new space once occupied by Curriculum and Media Collections. For years
Special Collections and University Archives have needed more space for the ever
expanding documents of the University and the growth of collections, both
manuscript and book. This move separates the University Archives (which are a
collection unto themselves) from Special Collections allowing for continued
growth in each area.

Also this summer, Mike
Broadbent a dedicated library volunteer, has completed the typing of names from
the Max Bonzo Photograph Collection into a searchable database. This will allow
much easier access to patrons who are searching for their family photographs.
We appreciate all Mike’s hard work on this endeavor.

Special Collections and
University Archives are looking forward to the Library’s Gala this fall where
we will celebrate 50 years of service to SUU, the community, and to our many
friends and researchers that we have had come through our doors.

Our friend Homer Jones passed away peacefully in his sleep early Memorial Day morning. He was 102 years old.

Homer was an award winning photographer. He owned and operated Zion Photo in Cedar City for nearly 40 years. He later donated his collection of photographs and negatives to the Sherratt Library Special Collections. We have some of his photographs digitized and online. They can be found on the Library's website at the following link. Homer Jones Photograph Collection

Homer married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Belle Macfarlane and together they enjoyed 73 years of married life until her passing in 2003. Homer was a friend to everyone. When he turned 85 he volunteered to deliver meals on wheels to the "old people" which he did faithfully for several years. Homer loved to travel, see new places and meet new people, but in all of his travels he never found anywhere he liked quite as well as Cedar City, Utah.

We'll miss you Homer Swapp Jones.
SUU Although the origins of Valentine's Day are murky, ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia, a spring festival, on the fifteenth of February. Like so many holidays, a Christian gloss was added to the pagan fete when the holiday moved to the fourteenth of February—the saint day associated with several early Christian martyrs named Valentine.

The romance we associate with Valentine's Day may spring from the medieval belief that birds select their mates on February 14. During the Middle Ages, lovers recited verse or prose to one another in honor of the day.

Handmade valentines, probably the first greeting cards, appeared in the sixteenth century. Mass production of cards began as early as 1800. Initially hand-tinted by factory workers, by the early twentieth century even fancy lace and ribbon-strewn cards were created by machine.

I folded a little missive
And called it a Valentine
And sent it a-way with its hidden freight
From this fluttering heart of mine

SUU Archiveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13810880515376120496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7590907009602473185.post-43708253735740024392011-12-12T10:11:00.000-08:002011-12-12T10:52:53.119-08:00Seasons Greetings from the Archives!
As an archivist I get to hold history in my hands.

Archives: The Records of Our Lives.

1. What are archives?

Archives are the non-current records of individuals, groups, institutions, and governments that contain information of enduring value. Archival records are the products of everyday life. Formats represented in the modern archival repository include photographs, films, video and sound recordings, as well as the more traditional unpublished letters, diaries, and other manuscripts.

2. Who uses archival records?

Researchers use them both for their administrative value and for purposes other than those for which they were created. For example, Native Americans may use archival records to establish legal claims to land and privileges guaranteed by federal and state governments; medical researchers utilize records to study patterns of diseases; authors use archives to acquire a feel for the people and times about which they are writing; historians and genealogists rely on archival sources to analyze past events to reconstruct family histories; and businesses use the records to improve their public relations and to promote new products. In short, archives benefit nearly everyone, even those who have never directly used them.

3. What does an archivist do?

The primary task of the archivist is to establish and maintain control, both physically and intellectual, over records of enduring value. Archivists select records, a process that requires an understanding of the historical context in which the records were created, the uses for which they were intended, and their relationships to other sources. The archivist then arranges and describes the records, in accordance with accepted standards and practices; ensures the long-term preservation of collections; assists researchers; and plans and directs exhibitions, publications, and other outreach progams to broaden the use of collections.

More commonly called Branch Normal School (BNS). This building was to be used until a permanent building could be constructed on ground situated on the most beautiful site in Cedar City.

While the people of Cedar City were exerting their energies toward the final touches on the Ward Hall, the Board of Regents of the University of Utah had more carefully read the enabling legislation. They now realized they had a problem.

The problem was that the legislation was worded in such a manner that the $15,000 appropriation for funding the school year 1897-98 could not be released until the permanent building, built on the designated property, was deeded to the State. There was no money to pay the four hired teachers, no money for books and equipment. So much for the problem. As to the solution.......for another day.SUU Archiveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13810880515376120496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7590907009602473185.post-57579398976348723952011-03-04T11:27:00.000-08:002011-03-04T12:00:26.910-08:00What's on the Garden Level?

What's on the Garden Level?

Special Collections and University Archives are found on the Garden Level of the Gerald R.
